Who will be Benegal's Carmen?

Now that Shyam Benegal has decided to revive his costliest project "Chamki", a desi version of French musician Georges Bizet's 1875 opera "Carmen", the question is who will play the title role of a free-spirited fiery-tempered gypsy in the movie?

According to sources, Priyanka Chopra more than Kareena Kapoor is the natural choice to play Chamki since the role requires a trained dancer.

When contacted, Priyanka told IANS that she was open to the offer. "But I read the script ages ago. The whole project now has to be evaluated afresh. And who wouldn't want to work with Shyam Benegal?"

"Chamki" has been pending for a while. Earlier, the project was with Sanjay Gupta. Now, Big Pictures is producing the film.

In the past too, both Priyanka and Kareena were approached for "Chamki", but they opted out for various reasons.

"Kareena was excited to begin with. She was supremely charged by the role and what Benegal had done with her sister Karisma in 'Zubeidaa'. But then she opted out - as she often does from offbeat challenges like Deepa Mehta's 'Water' and Rituparno Ghosh's 'Raincoat' - pleading it was too early for her to attempt something so unconventional," said a source close to the project.

"Then came Priyanka who was quite kicked about the part, but she and the film's then producer Sanjay Gupta had a fallout after Priyanka said no to his 'Musafir'. The 'Chamki' role then went to Urmila Matondkar, who had monetary issues with the producer."

With the film changing producers, it is understood that money is no longer an issue.

While Priyanka is still interested in the project, Kareena's views were not yet known.

"Kareena continues to have reservations about non-mainstream cinema. Barring Pritish Nandy Communications' 'Chameli', she has never returned to non-mainstream cinema," said the source.

'Chamki', set in Rajasthan, is being re-designed as a big broad epic musical with choreography and lavish songs by Javed Akhtar and A.R. Rahman.

"No expense will be spared to make 'Chamki' a big blockbuster," added the source.

Priyanka Chopra doesn’t mind playing a lesbian

Free Mp3 Download
Priyanka Chopra is a hot property these days, forger about her last three misses, coz she has just hit the jackpot with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion and then there is Dostana in the queue with hot men John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan who are happy and gay(pun intended).

When quizzed is she would turn gay for a role, pat came the reply, “Why not? I would toy with the idea of playing a lesbian character if the role was well written and the script was rock solid. I’m all for equality and gay rights anyway.”
The hot Chopra girl also revealed about her hot gold swimwear for the flick, saying, “You see, I like playing different characters on-screen; in real life I try being as much ‘me’ as possible. The character, the film, the location – were all right. And in this case, it wasn’t so much the swimsuit being tailored for me as me being inspired by the swimsuit. Manish (Malhotra) got hold of this stunning gold swimwear and I was so floored that I worked at getting into it, the rest is history.I wore a swimsuit and rose from the sea ‘coz it was different too.”

Fashion exposes Bhandarkars limitations

Fashion” was expected to expose the cold realities of India’s fashion industry, but it ends up revealing Madhur Bhandarkar’s limitations as a writer and director.Just like his last two films, “Corporate” and “Traffic Signal”, in “Fashion” too Bhandarkar skims the surface instead of digging deep. For those who are aware of his style of filmmaking, it is a predictable narrative.

The movie, touted as his costliest and most glamorous so far, is said to be doing well at the box office. But it doesn’t go into the heart of the industry, such as the business aspect, the intricate backstage work that goes into shows and aspects of design.“Fashion” shows modelling as a dazzling profession on the outside but as brutal from inside and this is one of the drawbacks of the film. Every profession has its merits and demerits and perhaps the director shouldn’t have demonised modelling the way he has done in the movie.

Another problem with the storyline is that despite being successful, the two starry-eyed girls from small towns played by Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut are often shown as leading miserable personal lives - a cliche if there ever was one.Kangana, whose character is reportedly modelled on real life model Geetanjali Nagpal, is a high-profile model with loads of attitude. She indulges in drugs, leading to her downfall. Priyanka too goes through the same.

In reality, there are several successful models leading a normal and contented life.Another flaw is that Bhandarkar portrays virtually all male designers as gay.It may be certainly an uphill task to have a gripping storyline about people changing their clothes frequently - there are 11 character-based ramp walks and Priyanka has 137 dress changes in the film!

Bhandarkar, whose “Chandni Bar” and “Page 3″ showed the stark reality of the lives of bar dancers and high profile socialites, could have made the film more arresting and informative with greater detailing and research. From the beginning, the movie throws the viewer into the chaos of the fashion world but leaves viewers looking for more meat.

Bhandarkar, who co-scripted the story with Anuradha Tiwari and Ajay Monga, fails to capture the intricacies of the fashion world. Bhandarkar’s “Fashion” will perhaps be remembered as just another superficial movie on the style industry like Hollywood’s “Gia”.

Priyankas been unlucky!

Starting with Salaam-e-Ishq , she has had a series of non-starrers at the box office ending with the debacle of her last release Drona .

“More than half a dozen of her films have bombed at the box office and the only film which can be a face saver for her now is Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion ,” says a trade pundit. Then there’s Dostana releasing soon after. Let’s wait and watch if luck favours her this time around.

My Man should be. Priyanka Chopra

Your man will be from?
I myself do not know whether he exists or not! (laughs) Please find him out for me and do let me know.

That means you are not on a look-out!
No, I have no time right now as I am concentrating on my career. I will think when the time comes.

Any particular image of your man?
A man who knows how to live with all the shortcomings keeping in mind the ethical values of society.

How would he be ? Man with Brain or Brawn!
Obviously, with Brain.

Bearded or clean-shaven?
Clean-shaven, please.

Would he be a metrosexual man?
That’s his wish. But, yes, he should live within the norms and ways of society. I have no such intentions of getting inclined to a metrosexual man.

And what if he is a bisexual?
The very thought of sharing my beloved with anybody else irritates me. I will definitely leave him.

Can you love one, and have sex with another?
Never, I can never ever dream about it!
