'I am extremely shy of women'

King Khan was in Singapore for the Zee Carnival on October 11 and 12 at the Suntec Convention Centre. It was easier to catch him at the Changi airport than it is to nail him down in India. Shah Rukh Khan, the unquestioned Baadshah of Bollywood, opened out a side of him not easily seen in film glossies. This quote-centred profile offers a glimpse of this mega successful star, producer, television anchor and businessman son of the late Meer Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima whose greatest regret in life is that his parents are not around to share his success. Shoma A Chatterji offers us a glimpse...
Did you know that Shah Rukh Khan had finished reading Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram much before the book hit India shores and recommended it to some of his producer friends?
"I asked them if they would want to make a film based on the book but there was no response. Now, Hollywood has taken it," says the star whose home library has a collection of more than 5,000 books of which there are at least three he wants to turn into films. "The other two I have really enjoyed are Mark Haddon’s murder mystery, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Yann Martel's fantasy adventure Life of Pi. Right now, my reading priorities are focussed on biopics about people who have led interesting lives."
Now look who is talking. He has led and is leading one of the most interesting lives himself on planet earth. His face is an icon that represents the Indian film industry in the world.

Rekha Turns 54

From 12 to 54 - 42 years of reigning over Bollywood and counting. The engimatic Rekha turns 54 Friday, still mesmerising filmgoers and the industry too with her pout and expressive eyes.
Director Pradeep Sarkar, who cast her for a song in his film "Parineeta", describes her as a perfect blend of beauty and glamour.

"I could not think of any other actress except Rekha for the song 'Kaisi paheli zindagaani' as the song had a nostalgic feel and was, at the same time, sensuous. The way Rekha carried herself in the song can only be done by an actress of her calibre. She is a perfect blend of beauty, glamour and talent," Sarkar told IANS.

At a time when a new Bollywood star seems to be born every Friday, Rekha's admirers bridge the generation gap.

Shweta Joshi, B.Com first year student, said: "I saw her film 'Khoon Bhari Maang' on DVD. I was awestruck by her performance. The way she carried herself as a simple wife and a glamorous model was something I cannot go without appreciating. Also, her performance in the song 'Kaisi paheli zindagaani' in 'Parineeta' was marvellous."

Rekha gave memorable performances in "Ghar", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Khubsoorat", "Silsila", "Vijeta", "Utsav", "Khoon Bhari Maang", "Zubeida", "Bhoot" and "Krrish".

Daughter of renowned Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha was born in Chennai Oct 10, 1954. She was called Bhanurekha Ganesan.

Rekha's journey into showbiz was not easy. The money crunch in the family forced her to do films. In 1966, when she was only 12, she started her career as a child artiste in a Telugu film "Rangula Ratnam". She went on to act in more than 180 films in a career spanning 42 years.

Her first Hindi film was "Sawan Bhadon" where she was paired with Navin Nischol. But, because of her inability to speak Hindi and being overweight, audiences rejected her.

Gradually she carved a niche for herself with films like "Kahani Kismat Ki", "Namak Haram", "Raampur Ka Lakshman" and "Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye".

As an actress she evolved with each role, working at the same time on her look and finally establishing herself as one of filmdom's most glamorous actresses.

Her first performance-oriented role came in 1976 when she signed "Do Anjaane" with Amitabh Bachchan.

But it was Prakash Mehra's "Muqaddar Ka Sikander", again with Amitabh, that made her a household name. Her portrayal of the character of a courtesan in the film won her rave reviews and the film was the biggest hit of the year.

"The way Rekha performed in the film could not have been done by any other actress! It was her character in the movie along with her dedicated performance that led to the successful shaping of the story," said Mehra.

"I always wanted to cast an actress for that character who did not have a huge star background but was a good actress and Rekha fitted the bill. I think after that film I lost the chance of not calling her a big star," an ailing Mehra quipped.

Rekha, who was the Bollywood sex symbol for long, has also won the National Award for her acting in "Umraao Jaan".

Farooque Shaikh, her co-star in the film, is all praise for her.

He said: "Rekha has been one of the most vibrant and spontaneous actor I have ever worked with. While working with her in 'Umraao Jaan', I came to know why she is called one of the finest actors. Her reactions in every scene and her portrayal of the character helped me give a better performance.

"The character required a really good actor and Rekha carried it off effortlessly which mesmerised all."

Echoing the view, veteran director Shyam Benegal, who had worked with Rekha in films like "Kalyug" and "Zubeidaa", said: "She is a flexible actor who can fit into any role easily. Rekha in spite of being associated with glamour has always portrayed deglamourised roles with equal conviction, which makes her a great actor."

Young director Raj Kumar Gupta too is fascinated by her charismatic persona.

Gupta, who debuted with acclaimed movie "Aamir", said: "Rekhaji is an icon for us. Her portrayal of different and varied characters has shown the range of her acting. It is a dream of every new filmmaker to work with her."

Rekha is quite secretive about her personal life. She lives with her secretary Farzana and is seen only in select award functions.

Recently Rekha has been signed by director Raj Kanwar for his film "Sadiyaan", in which she is paired with Rishi Kapoor.

Karisma Promises to Be A Fair Judge

Karisma Kapoor ready to have Star One’s TRPs soaring… who wouldn’t tune in to watch one of the sexiest actresses of Bollywood judge the dance show.
It was quite a news when we heard Lolo has taken up Nach Baliye. People speculated that Karisma wanted to get back her popularity before she makes a Bollywood comeback. But Lolo says,

“I am back, but this is not my comeback. Everyone is doing television, so why not me? I have been a dancer all my life but this is the first time that I will be judging others on their dancing skills. People used to judge me until now but now, I will be judging them,” she says.
Quite a few of Karisma’s contemporaries like Raveena Tandon and Sonali Bendre have taken to television reality shows as judges, perhaps that gave Karisma to give a nod to the offer.

“I do not believe in herd mentality. Yes, there are numerous shows mushrooming, but if a reality show had come to me earlier, I wouldn’t have considered it. The timing had to be right,” she explains.
And how does she plan to go about judging -

I am expecting good performances and great chemistry from the couples. I hope to bring my knowledge of dance to the contestants. I will be encouraging and fair. All three [judges] of us will be honest with the participants when it comes to giving marks.

Censor Chops Condom Dialogue for Hello

When the entire world is going mad preaching safe sex and usage of condoms, looks like our Indian censor board is still caught up in the pre-historic times. Apparently, the censor board found the usage of word ‘condom’ offensive in the movie Hello.

There is a lovemaking scene in Hello between Gul Panag and Sharman Joshi. The two are well educated call centre executives. Before they get intimate in the scene, Gul asks Joshi to use a condom.

It is said that the dialogue did not go down well with the jury of the censor board, so they ordered that the dialogue be deleted. Ironically, they have retained the lovemaking scene and deleted the dialogue.

I Admire Abhishek: Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai who was recently at the inauguration of a Longines store in New Delhi, was more than forthcoming talking about her hubby dearest Abhishek Bachchan. She was her usual chirpy self and could stop gushing about Abhi.Drona might not have got rave reviews but Ash is all praises for Abhi.

“I think he’s a wonderful actor. I’ve always admired his approach to his work. You have to admire all the actors (in Drona), I did. Abhishek played Drona realistically. I viewed the film through a child’s eyes. It has to be perceived as a fantasy adventure,” she said.
Ash maintains that Abhi is a mature actor who understands cinema well enough to make good career decisions.

He understands cinema so well that he is not afraid of taking risks. He stands by his family, friends all the time and because of this I identify a lot with him,” she gushed.
“I know him for a very long time now. Together we have grown from actors to colleagues to friends and now we share a very special bond. It is definitely a nice feeling,” she added.

Karisma's return isn't a comeback

She has been away from the limelight for a while but Karisma Kapoor, refuses to dub her return as a judge on Nach Baliye 4 as a ‘comeback’. “I don’t want to call it my comeback. When Julia Roberts does a film after a long period, is it called a comeback? If not, then why in my case?” she asks.

But why a dance show? “I’ve always loved dancing. People loved me in dance numbers too. I had free time on my hands. So I gave it a nod. Till now people used to judge me but now I’ll be on the judge’s seat,” she laughs. Talking about the small screen, the actor did the show Karishma— A Miracle of Destiny in the past. Does she regret doing the show considering that it didn’t create waves? “Absolutely not! I grew as an actress and learnt a new medium. The show was not axed like a lot of other shows. It completed its time period. My performance was appreciated.”

Karisma, who has done almost 60 films, has no regrets even about those films that didn’t do well. “I gave my heart and soul to all. I am proud of all of my films.”

Contrary to rumours Karisma maintains that she has not signed any film. “I am looking for a script that would excite me.” Would she do only heroine- oriented films? “I don’t think so. I am game for any role that will make me feel like returning on the sets,” she says.

Last year Madhuri Dixit’s hugely publicised Aaja Nachle sank. What’s Karisma’s take on ‘comeback stars’ failing at the ticket counters? “If a film fails, it does not necessarily mean that the actor has failed. One person can’t be held responsible for a film’s debacle,” she asserts.

About enjoying the pause after marriage she says, “I have worked long enough. It was a well-deserved break. I’m happy to have dedicated my time to my daughter (Samaira).”When asked about how motherhood has changed her as a person, she says, “It’s the most beautiful feeling. I’ve become more responsible in my thought and actions,” she beams.

How does Samaira react when she spots her on screen? “At first, it was a little weird for her because she’s used to seeing her masi Kareena (Kapoor) on screen. Gradually, she has realised that her mother also is an actress,” she quips.

Item songs are sheer nonsense

Yes, it’s good to be glam once in a while but I feel these days, it has gone beyond limit. I guess even the audience does not like it,” she states. One word of advice to aspiring actors? “Act from the face and not from the body that’s when you grow as an actor,” she says.

One of the films in which she did that and which showed immensely onscreen was Snehitiye.

Remind her of that film and she immediately breaks into a smile. “Being an all-girls film, we had awesome fun during the shoot,” she states, even as she reminisces incidents from the film.

Kidnap Movie Review

Kidnap had enough reasons to draw people to the theatres –
1. It is Imran Khan’s second movie after his very successful debut. He looked very sexy in the role of a tough baddie. (I’m talking about the promos)
2. It’s a Sanjay Gadhvi movie – the successful director of Dhoom series.
3. Sanjay Dutt
4 Minissha Lamba in her new bikinilicious avatar
Plus it was supposed to be the Eid attraction.

The promos gave the impression that Kidnap is going to be a typical Sanjay Gadhvi action-suspense Masala flick. Big names, good locales, interesting story and plot and a couple of good songs… all the perfect ingredients for a successful film. But does this concoction impress? Lets see…

As soon as Minissha Lamba is done with her introductory item number and skin show, she gets kidnapped… Whoa! That was pretty fast. No time wasted there. And then begins the cat and the mouse came between Sanjay Dutt (who plays Minissha’s father) and Kabir (Imran Khan). We are not given any information on Kabir and his motive behind the kidnapping of Sonia (that exactly is the suspense) and it leaves the audience more curious as to why the kidnapper doesn’t want a huge ransom from such a rich man.

The first half manages to keep you hooked, thanks to a well-etched plot and Minissha Lamba’s ample cleavage show… But when the climax is unfolded with the actual reason why Kabir kidnaps Sonia and how the movie ends is extremely disappointing… and that makes all the difference to the film.

Performances are just about average. Sanjay Dutt, looks extremely tired in the movie, he needs to work a little bit on his body. There is nothing much to do for, he just glided over his role. Imran Khan, well, the lad looks great but he should work on his intonation, his dialogue delivery sounds a little monotonous. Minissha Lamba does what she was expected to do – act like a pretty prop, she carried her bikini sequence with élan. Vidya Malvade… I wonder why she was chosen for that role.

Over all, it’s a fairly nice time-pass flick. It has everything that appeals to the eye. So go for it.

Rating – 2.5/5

Drona Movie Review

All hype no show – Wish I could give this one line review of Drona. Disappointing fare from Goldie Behl.

Like all super hero films the story is simple – Hero fights to save the world from a villain who wants to be immortal. The only difference being, that this superhero is straight out of Indian mythology with an Indian look.
The biggest pain in the movie was Kay Kay Menon’s character Riz Raizada. Poor characterization puts Menon’s effort to waste. The character seems to be inspired by Batman’s Joker. His weird and garish wardrobe and hairstyle makes him look like a gay… really a torture.

The movie reminded me of that tacky serial of our childhood Alif Laila where the virtuous desi-super hero fights all odds to beat the villain. The challenges that Drona faces to succeed in his mission are far from impressive. The sword fights and car chases are all clichéd.

Abhishek Bachchan, quite honestly speaking is unsuitable for the role of a Super hero. One cannot help but make the unjust comparison with Hrithik Roshan in Krrish. Also, he lacks the physique of an action hero; he should work that belly flab out.

Priyanka Chopra could’ve been called the saving grace if her character was a little stronger. Jaya Bachchan has a small role, in most of which is she seems she is almost crying.

However, the actual saving grace of Drona is the special effects of the movie. The only thing you could bear the movie for. Otherwise a movie with a lousy story, average performances and poor screenplay and direction could just be called a ‘waste of time and effort’.

By the end of the movie… I really felt sorry for Abhishek who had so many hopes from this movie.

Ramchand Pakistani Movie Review

Most of us always identify Pakistani films as reflections of their essentially Muslim culture, we saw the same with Khuda Kay Liye. But Ramchand Pakistani, as the name suggests, talks about an issue, which was never discussed, in both the Indian and Pakistani cinemas before – the issue of poor Dalit Hindus in ‘Muslim’ Pakistan.

However, the movie is not there to make a statement about the Dalit issues or religious sentiments in India or Pakistan. It is there simply to show people the intricacy and beauty of the human bonding in a politically hostile environment.

A Pakistani director may have directed the film, but the film doesn’t take sides. It doesn’t decide what is right or wrong, it doesn’t the political hostility and it doesn’t criticize the legal and social systems on both sides of the border. It is secular and non-judgmental.

It simply tells the tale of a small innocent Pakistani Hindu family that become victims of political hostility between the two countries. 7-year-old Ramchand (Syed Fazal Hussain) and his father Shankar (Rashid Farooqui) accidentally cross the border and enter India where they are arrested by the border security on pretext of spying. The are imprisoned in Gujarat for five years while Ramchand’s mother Champa (Nandita Das) helplessly waits for her husband and son.

Its amazing how director Mehreen Jabbar, focused purely on the evolution of Ramchand in the prison and his relationship with his father and with the jail’s female warden Kamla. Champa’s struggle for survival all alone is also very beautifully depicted.

Overall, its an amazing movie, superb storytelling, screenplay and direction. The performances by all the actors are commendable.

It’s a must watch.

'I said yes to Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena because of Sushmita'

Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram is now dabbling in something he has never tried before -- judging a television dance show. Not to forget, even dancing on the show!

He talks to Rajul Hegde about Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, who his favourite dancer is on the show, and why he chose to be a part of this show. Also Read: When cricketers took to the dance floor! Why judge a dance show?

When I was told that this was a dance reality show, I asked them what I was going to do on it. Then they told me that there would be six cricketers dancing and I would be judging them. So I thought why not have fun with it! But the real reason why I said yes was Sushmita Sen [Images]. She is my all-time favourite and I was lucky enough be her co-judge.

How has the experience been?It was fun and a very different experience. Working with cricketers and beautiful ladies of the industry was exceptional. Sushmita is a professional and down-to-earth person, and I enjoyed her company. To see the cricketers practice dance for 12 hours and perform was amazing.

Do you watch reality shows?I did earlier, but only the dance shows. I also like Bigg Boss 2.Who is your favourite couple on Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena? All are good and have worked really hard. Sreesanth [Images] is a very good dancer. Also Read: Mona Singh, Harbhajan go dancing!Honestly, now wouldn't you like to flirt with Sushmita?

Why not? [laughs]Sushmita said cricketers are very intelligent.Oh really? When did she say this? But I don't consider myself stupid, that's for sure [laughs].You danced on the show as well.

Yes, I did. I was quite nervous when I performed to the title track of Don. I had rehearsed for nearly three hours, but as soon as I started, I almost forgot my steps. Are we going to see more of you on television? If something interesting comes my way I will definitely take it up.

What about acting in Bollywood? It's not my cup of tea. I love watching films. It's hard work for me to act. I can only watch. [smiles]What do you think about cricketers getting into showbiz?

I don't think it is wrong. If cricketers have enough time on their hands, why not have some fun? But at the end of the day, cricket should not be compromised.

I follow Akshay into projects: Katrina Kaif

British-born Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif, who has given many hits with Akshay Kumar, says she trusts the star's script sense and often follows him into projects. Katrina's last hit with Akshay was Singh is Kinng.

Images: Katrina voted sexiest woman in the world "He has a fantastic script sense. And you know, when he's doing it, it will work. Not that I go blindly into films that feature him. But, yes, he does have a fantastic knowledge of what works at the box office. That explains our success ratio together," Katrina said.

Interestingly, in Vipul Shah's Namastey London, Katrina had the main role while Akshay played the supporting part. The tables were turned in Singh Is Kinng. But Katrina says she wasn't allowed to complain.

"Every time I'd start complaining about the size of my role, Akshay would order me to go and stand in a corner and repeat Namastey London five times and be quiet. He's right. He needn't have done Namastey London, which was the girl's story," said Katrina who teamed up with Akshay in Welcome as well.

Read: Katrina finds Sohail wittier than Sallu .After doing out and out commercial roles, Katrina changes gear with Prakash Jha's Rajneeti in which she'll go from a young student to a married woman, and beyond. "I didn't think I was ready to do something like this. But then I heard the script and I couldn't resist it. Maybe because Prakashji is such a good narrator, I fell in love with my character," she said. She feels if Rajneeti works, it will bring an interesting turn to her career.

"I'm doing enough hardcore commercial films. At this juncture of my career I can afford to do something that challenges me. As long as the script is entertaining, I'm all for it. "As for my character, she's a light-hearted character to begin with. Later she grows serious and ambitious. If it works, it can do a lot for my career." Katrina has a spate of releases lined up including Hello, Yuvraaj and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

"Is that a bad thing? A lot of my films have run into one another, films that I had committed to way in advance. These are things I can't control. And I really want to do these films. Or I wouldn't be doing them in the first place." However, Katrina won't be taken for granted by people around her. "You've to stand your ground. I can't please everyone all the time. I've realised that."

Guess who's pampering Riya Sen?

It seems like Riya Sen is loving every moment of working in Nauka Dubi. The film, which is being shot in West Bengal has Riya and Raima working together – not as sisters but rather as wives going through turbulent marriages.

And from what we are given to believe, Riya has been getting special treatment on the sets. All of it has to do with one man.

Now before you start wondering just who the man is, allow us to tell you it's Rituparno Ghosh. The director considers Riya to be her daughter and has been pampering her silly. So everything Riya asks for is promptly made available.

Nauka Dubi is based on an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's novel by the same name and is being shot in Shantiniketan right now. Riya has been cast opposite Jishu Sengupta who also starred in The Last Lear.

Motherhood changed me: Karisma Kapoor

Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, who is back with her industrialist husband Sunjay Kapur and will soon be seen as a judge on the fourth season of Naach Baliye, says that being a mother has been the best experience of her life.

"Motherhood changed me a lot as it has made me more responsible and mature as a human being. Being a mother is the best experience of my life," said Karisma, who is on a long sabbatical after marriage in 2003.

Karisma was at the top of the number game in Bollywood for half a decade churning out hits like Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Judwaa, Biwi No 1 and critically acclaimed films - Zubeidaa and Fiza.Karisma says she misses acting which has been her passion and the gap was just a break for her.

"I started my career at a very early age and have done all types of films. I have been lucky enough to have experimented with all kinds of roles. Being away from acting has just been a break for me," said Karisma who started her career at the age of 17 with Prem Qaidi. She won four Filmfare awards for Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Fiza and Zubeidaa.

Commenting upon her role as a judge on Naach Baliye 4, she said: "I have consented to be judge of the show as it will not be too hectic for me. I have to shoot once or twice a week and that will leave ample amount of time to devote to my home and daughter (Samaira)."

Karisma thinks the television scene has changed drastically and gap between the small and big screen has been reduced as more and more Bollywood actors are doing TV shows.

"Most of my colleagues whom I worked with, have been on television for various shows, be it Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar or others. At the same time, many television actors have also made a mark for themselves on the big screen," the actress said.

Karisma is open to similar kind of offers and would also not mind anchoring shows if it suits her taste.

As far as acting in films is concerned, Karisma said: "Just wait and watch." The actress was supposed to make a comeback with Lamha.

Sushmita swings Wasim Akram her way

Guess who's making former Pakistan cricket captain and swing king Wasim Akram sway to her tunes nowadays? Bollywood actress and former beauty queen Sushmita Sen.

Akram, who is currently co-judging an Indian reality TV show Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina with Sushmita, is totally gaga over the actress."I think she is an incredible person, very helpful, extremely professional and, yes, she has really made me comfortable on the show," said Akram in an interview.Akram first interacted with Sushmita in Dubai in 2006.

"I met her about two years ago in Dubai. We did a telethon for Imran Khan's cancer hospital together. That was two days in a row and almost three hours live on TV. So I got to interact with her. We managed to raise quite a bit of money," he said.Sushmita was also one of the reasons why he agreed to be on the judging panel of this show."So far the game is really exciting and fun. It's something very different and that's why I agreed to the show and, plus, I was told that Sushmita would be there; so I agreed."

Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina pits six pairs of a cricketer and a TV actress each to display their dancing skills. The cricketers on the show include S. Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh, Vinod Kambli, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Kartik and Nikhil Mehra.

In one of the recent episodes, Akram has been seen reciting shayari (Urdu couplets) to flatter the actress, but he has not shaken a leg with her so far. Any plans?"Maybe. In fact, they have tried to make me dance, but I really can't handle that sort of pressure. Playing the world cup final twice was okay, but not this," he says.

Akram is also entirely dependent on Sushmita to judge the dancing capabilities of the contestants, as he "can't make out the head or tail of dancing"."I wanted to see how the cricketers behave on the stage. I'm not judging the technicalities of their dance. For that Sushmita is there. I have no clue about dancing, what would I comment. I'm not looking at their steps at all. For me, their passion is important," he said.

He added: "We are not looking for a dance icon who would go into Bollywood and dance. The idea is to have cricketers dancing and see how they do on the stage. The girls, all six of them, are very talented and excellent. But, for the boys, it's a new thing."So what is his criterion for judging? "For me it's like one day cricket - perform on the day, if you play well, you'll win."

Akram feels that though such a show will be a hit in Pakistan, not many cricketers there will agree to take part in it."It will be a big hit there no doubt, but where will the Pakistani cricketers dance there? I don't think the Pakistani cricketers will dance. First let them play well at least," he said and laughed.

A lot of actors in India and Pakistan are looking to make a mark in Bollywood, but Akram feels otherwise."I do enjoy acting and watching movies. But acting is a proper profession; you have to learn for it. I've seen cricketers who have done films. But after one or two films, they are not seen any more and I don't want to be one of them."I am happy to leave acting in Bollywood to Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan - all these great actors," said Akram.

When Rani called Shahid ‘SIR’

Rani Mukherjee who is currently shooting with Shahid Kapoor for Yash Raj’s next flick had to take back her words when it finally got on Shahid’s nerves.

A source says, “It’s a known fact that Rani is older to Shahid by a few years.Rani was hell bent on not letting their age difference be visible not only on screen but off the screen as well.”
So Rani started addressing him as, ‘Shahid Sir’ every now and then. Initially Shahid found it amusing. Shahid however, could not hide his embarrassment as she would say that in front of the entire Yash Raj unit which is like a ‘home ground’ for her. But after a point it started grating on his nerves when every single person in the unit started aping Rani and addressing him as ‘Shahid Sir’. Last week when Rani’s Man Friday went up to him to give Rani’s message to join him for lunch during the shooting lunch break and ended up using the ‘Shahid Sir’ term as usual. An irritated Shahid shouted back at him for using it and the poor chap literally ran back to Rani. Shahid didn’t join Rani for lunch but the matter seemed to be over by the evening after Rani went and spoke to him after the shoot for the day got over.”

“Now they both are calling each other by their first names.” adds the source.
I wonder why Shahid didn’t call Rani- Rani Aunty, that would have done full justice to Rani’s age.

I don't mind being overshadowed by Aishwarya

Abhishek Bachchan, who is all geared up for the release of "Drona" this week, says he doesn't mind being overshadowed by his wife Aishwarya Rai.
At this year's Cannes Film Festival attended by him and his wife, Abhishek was repeatedly asked how it felt to be overshadowed by his wife.

"Although the intention behind such questions is obviously not honourable, I don't get rattled at all. It's a pleasure to be overshadowed by the most beautiful woman in the world. I had a ball doing the 'Unforgettable' concerts with Aishwarya," Abhishek told IANS.

After "Guru", the actor is teaming up with his wife once again for Mani Ratnam's next film.

"I know I'll have a great time shooting Mani Ratnam's film with her. Right now I'm looking forward to her return from Brazil," he said.

Aishwayra was in Brazil shooting for Shankar's "Robot". Abhishek said he was looking forward to Aishwarya's presence at the premiere of "Drona".

"It sounds very romantic to say my wife is flying down especially to be at my film's premiere. But sadly, it is not true. Her schedule for Shankar's 'Robot' was supposed to wrap up a week before the premiere, and it did. So she was going to be in Mumbai for the 'Drona' premiere anyway.

"Having said this, let me add, she'd have come back to Mumbai for the occasion from any part of the world even if she was shooting."

Aishwarya was recently in Paris to shoot the latest L'Oreal ad. Both her in-laws, Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan, were also there, but they couldn't meet her.

"Yes they were there. Unfortunately ma and pa left a day before Aishwarya arrived in Paris. Pa had to be back to shoot a television programme to promote the 'Unforgettable' concerts in India."

"Yes, the 'Unforgettable' concerts are now going to be staged in India, beginning with Mumbai.

"We're in the process of working out the venues and dates. There'll be more time for all this once 'Drona' is released,"said Abhishek.

Directed by Goldie Behl, "Drona" also stars Priyanka Chopra and Kay Kay Menon.

I'd love Raj Thackeray to watch 'Drona': Abhishek

Abhishek Bachchan says he would like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray to watch his ambitious fantasy adventure “Drona”, releasing Thursday."I'd love Raj Thackeray to watch 'Drona'. I hope he does. And I hope he enjoys it. I know he will. He loves watching good films. And I'd like to think 'Drona' is a good film," Abhishek told IANS.

It seems Abhishek has no ill-feelings towards Raj Thackeray who disrupted the premiere of his father's film "The Last Lear" after Jaya Bachchan's "anti-Marathi" remarks last month. In fact, there is widespread speculation that Raj would be invited to the “Drona” premiere to be held here Oct 2.

Abhishek neither confirmed nor denied this possibility.

I'm single, Riteish is just a friend: Genelia

Genelia D'Souza, Imran Khan's petite and perky co-star in "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na", brushes off rumours of any relationship with Riteish Deshmukh with a "we're just friends."

Genelia teamed up with Riteish for her first Hindi film "Tujhe Meri Kasam" and they were seen together once again in "Masti". While "Tujhe Meri Kasam" bit the dust at the box office, "Masti" hit bull's eye. But the film's success didn't help much in shaping her career.

"I'm very much single. Riteish is a friend. But that's it. I've no idea where these rumours come from. We're both very busy. When we occasionally meet up, we're normal with each other, not the least selfconscious about what's written about us. I'm very new to all this. I've done two films with Riteish - 'Tujhe Meri Kasam' and 'Masti'," Genelia told IANS.

The actress forayed into showbiz with Amitabh Bachchan as her co-star.

"I did a Parker pen ad with him when I was still a kid. It seems I've been acting forever. I started young, yes. In 2003, I had three releases in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Strangely acting was never an option. That ad was directed by Mansoor Khan. He kept me in mind for 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na', and here I am," she said.

"Actually 'Jaane Tu...' was being produced by Jhamu Sugandh first. That's when I screen tested for the role of Aditi. I met the director Abbas Tyrewala and he almost finalised me. But he needed bulk dates from me and I was busy down South. He wanted to shoot at a stretch. I couldn't do that.

"Then one day I got a call from Aamir Khan's office. Abbas wanted a complete newcomer. But Aamir wanted a girl who suited the character. The next thing I knew, I was on board."

Genelia said she was never that keen on an acting career.

"But when I saw how I was appreciated down South, I fell in love with the industry. I've been lucky. I didn't plan anything. I've never contacted a single producer. So far it's been an awesome journey."

After Tamil and Telugu, Genelia has just made her debut in a Kannada film.

"I'm sure I'll be able to dub in all the South Indian languages soon. I know I can do it. I just need to get the slangs and colloquialisms correct. Honestly, I need to dub my own lines in the South to give complete performances."

Like Asin, Genelia is now dividing her time between Bollywood and the South.

"I'm getting a lot of calls in Mumbai. I want to balance it out. But the priority would be Hindi films right now because I've worked really long in the South. But my South Indian films are also very important.

"I get very satisfying roles in Tamil and Telugu. And I can't let them go. Let's just say I'll do one film down South for every two films I do here. In any case, they wrap up their films superfast down South.

"I also had fun doing Priyadarshan's 'Mere Baap Pehle Aap'. I enjoy doing films in all languages and genres."

She said that her commitment to southern directors affected her Bollywood career.

"I got busy with the South; that's the only reason why it took me so long to get noticed in Bollywood. There's a buzz about 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na' because it was Imran's debut film."

Right now she is busy shooting for "It's My Life" with Harman Baweja. It is a Hindi remake of Telugu hit, "Bommarilu".

"I've done the original in Telugu. Then I also did the remake in Tamil. Now I'm doing it in Hindi. The Tamil and Telugu versions were similar. But the Hindi version is very different. Today, both the South and Hindi are high-potential industries for me. I'm still a newcomer in Bollywood."

Dino Morea plans to launch brother as director

Bollywood actor Dino Morea, who recently started his own production house called Clockworks, says he plans to launch his younger brother as a director to fulfil his grandfather's wish.

"My grandfather used to watch a lot of films and he always wanted my younger brother to become a director. And he had this dream that my younger brother would one day become a big director. He said this to my father before his death and my father asked my brother to get into films," Dino told IANS in an interview.

Dino's brother Santino, who is also a model, is currently assisting director Karan Johar.

"I want my brother to learn about filmmaking and be a good director. That's why he is with Karan, who is a good director. And once he learns about it properly, I will be launching him in a big way," Dino said.

"We are planning a big movie, which he (Santino) will be directing. The story will revolve on what my grandfather was and my father might play a small role in it," the actor added.

But Santino's film won't be Dino's first project as producer. He plans to foray into film production with an adaptation of a successful play from Britain by theatre director Pravesh Kumar. And Pravesh has been signed on as director for Dino's film too.

Asked about the status of the film, the actor-producer said: "We are looking for tie-ups with presenters. Once that is done, we will go (ahead) with the film."

Has Kareena Kapoor been roped in for his maiden production?

"I have a wish list of people, but nothing has been finalised. We will be starting with the pre-production; once we are through with the tie-ups, then everything will be finalised.

"Director Pravesh Kumar, who is abroad, is also expected by next month and then we will take a call on the casting," Dino said.

The actor, who has worked in films like "Raaz" and "Holiday" has big plans for his Clockworks, but said he would take one step at a time.

"We will start with one film and then slowly increase the number of our productions in a year. I aim to have at least 10 films in a year later," Dino said.

After turning producer, Dino said he's become more selective about signing movies as an actor.

"I will be signing films with big banners only. Big banners have a good network and their films are marketed and distributed well. There is no point in doing a good film that people never get to see. I will do films that get released with at least 500 prints," he quipped.

And he maintains that he will manage playing the dual role well.

He said: "Though I have opened a production company to produce films, my priority will be both acting and production."

Any plans to act in the films he produces?

"I might be there in some of them," he replied.

Nightingale' Lata remains unchallenged at 80

Singer Lata Mangeshkar, known as the Nightingale of Bollywood for having mesmerised millions with her melodious voice for over six decades, enters her 80th year Sunday - and like every year she plans to keep it austere sans fanfare.

Lata has never celebrated her birthday in public and follows the same annual routine. She begins the day by praying at the Mahalaxmi Temple situated right across her home in Prabhu Kunj here.

This time she may attend a function at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital that she built in Pune in memory of her father.

From her first super hit "Aayega aanewaala" to "Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya" and "Noorie" to her recent bests like "Yeh hum aa gaye hain kahaan" and "Luka chuppi", Lata has managed to thrill music lovers of every generation with her soulful singing over her 66-year-long career and continues to do so.

From light classical music to film songs and from ghazals to bhajans and pop, she has sung a variety of numbers. Having worked with almost all top music composers and singers in the industry, Lata has sung more than 30,000 songs in over 20 Indian languages.

The singer featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.

"That 60 years down the line and having rendered over 25,000 songs, she has been able to maintain the same position is why she is called the Bollywood living legend," composer Anu Malik told IANS.

According to him, every song of hers is a musical gem as much for her singing quality as for its pure composition.

Born Sep 28, 1929, to a family of musicians settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Lata's life wasn't easy. After her father Dinanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor, died of heart ailment in 1942, his five children - Lata, Hridayanath, Asha, Usha, and Meena - and wife Shudhhamati had to struggle for survival.

Being the eldest of them, 13-year-old Lata had to see the family through the rough patch. And she did it single-handedly until her siblings grew up, each gifted with musical talent of varying degrees.

Till the time she voluntarily cut down her singing assignments in the late 1980s, Lata faced no competition from any of the female singers, barring her sister Asha Bhosle. Though Asha's career ran parallel with hers, it was on a different note and scale musically.

Lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar said Lata's greatness lay in her complete devotion to music.
"Singing for her is not merely a profession, it is akin to worship," he said.

Alka Yagnik, who grew up listening to Lata songs and idolised her before she became a playback singer herself, referred to the queen of melody as "a pure soul."

Anuradha Paudwal said: "Lata Mangeshkar is a perfect example of a playback singer who can modulate her voice according to various song situations and suit characters as per their age and social status."

Late maestro Naushad had once told this correspondent that when on a rainy day in 1943, she had come to meet him at the now-defunct Kardar Studios in Mumbai, he was busy in his music room and told her to wait.

"When I called her over and told her to sing, she chose one of Noor Jehan's numbers. She sang it with such perfection that my heart went out to her because she was drenched completely as she had waited under the rain. You rarely see such dedication," said the composer, for whom Lata sang many memorable songs later.

Lata pioneered many constructive changes in Bollywood, which proved to be beneficial for singers in the long run.

She was the one who introduced the royalty system for singers in the industry. She also insisted that the singer's name be published with the songs instead of actors.

Music director Shamir Tandon described Lata as "a genuine human being".

"The reason why she has ruled the industry and is still around is that she has always paid attention to the art of singing, always kept on upgrading herself, besides adopting herself to the changing times,

Saif Ali Khan in assault trouble in Punjab

Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan found himself in trouble Monday after the Government Railway Police (GRP) registered a case against him and four others of a film unit for allegedly assaulting a photojournalist.

Khan and members of the unit of his latest film "Three Idiots" were booked for assault, intimidation and inciting violence.

GRP officials said the move followed a complaint by a photojournalist from a Hindi newspaper who said he had been beaten up by the film unit staff after being incited by Khan.

The photographer was taking pictures of Khan at the railway station here Sunday. The star objected and told private security and film production unit associates to tackle the photojournalist following which he was allegedly thrashed.

"We will arrest him soon," GRP inspector general G.J.S. Grewal said here.

The registration of the case follows protests by mediapersons against Khan and others.

Age hasn't dampened Dev Anand's zest at 85

It was business as usual for India's hero through six decades and more who spent his 85th birthday Friday in the studios. But, a day before he leaves for London for the international launch of his book, the ever ebullient Dev Anand was also ready to party.

"I will be there in my studio and my friends will drop in to wish me. All are welcome in my studio. The whole industry including you is my friend," Anand told IANS.

No party had been planned but Anand said: "The get together of people who will come to wish me will automatically turn into a party."

The man who has epitomised romance through generations of cine watchers leaves for London Saturday for the launch of the international edition of his book "Romancing With Life".

"It will be a great moment of my life," he said.

He returns on Oct 5 after which he starts with the next schedule of the shoot for his film "Chargesheet" - he's acting and directing too.

"After I return from London, I will record a song with Asha Bhosle for my film and then proceed with the next schedule of shoot at Panchgani."

Clearly, that zest for life and work have kept him going when not just his contemporaries, but even those who followed him into the industry have long retired.

The man who serenaded generations of actresses and has had the fortune of having some of Bollywood's most memorable songs filmed on him is clearly set for more years of filmmaking.

Born in 1923 as Devdutt Pishorimal Anand in Gurdaspur, Punjab, Dev Anand was the middle son of well-to-do advocate Pishorimal Anand.

After graduation, Dev Anand moved to Mumbai in 1943 and joined his brother Chetan Anand. His first film was "Hum Ek Hain" (1946), but wasn't a big success.

The actor was offered his first big break by Ashok Kumar for "Ziddi" (1948) opposite Kamini Kaushal and the film went on to be a huge success.

A year after the success of "Ziddi", Anand launched his own company Navketan, which continues to churn out movies till date.

His next big hit was "Baazi" (1951) and after that the actor never looked back. He gave hits like "C.I.D" (1956), "Guide" (1965), "Jewel Thief"(1967), "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971) and "Des Pardes" (1978).

Dev Anand, who was bestowed India's highest award for cinematic excellence - the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002, was also romantically associated with singer-actress Suraiya. But since her grandmother opposed it, their relationship fell apart.

Heartbroken Dev Anand married his "Taxi Driver" co-star Kalpana Kartik and has son Suneil and daughter Devina.

The actor was known for his distinct dialogue delivery and dressing. His buttoned collar and full-sleeved shirts, colourful mufflers, hats and rebellious dressing sense still makes him stand apart from many an actor of his times.

His style was lapped up by the audience and was widely imitated. He starred in a string of box office successes for the remainder of the 1950s.

He worked closely with his brother Vijay Anand for the much-hyped "Jewel Thief", featuring a bevy of beauties led by Vyjayanthimala, Tanuja, Anju Mahendru, Faryal and Helen.

Their next collaboration, "Johnny Mera Naam" (1970) was also a big hit.

Anand tried his hand at direction with "Prem Pujari" in the same year but the film did not fare well at the box office. However, he got lucky with his 1971 directorial venture "Hare Rama Hare Krishna", based on the then prevalent hippie culture.

His last big hit as a director and actor was "Des Pardes" -- after that his films failed to excite the audience.

His most recent films which include "Love At Times Square" and "Mr Prime Minister" bombed at the box office.

Anand also has the credit of discovering Bollywood divas like Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim.

Zayed shooting for Bollywood's first underwater song

At the moment Zayed Khan has reason to be happy and unhappy. He's happy because he'll soon be shooting the first underwater song sequence ever in Hindi cinema. But inclement weather in Bangkok has held up shooting and the producers are losing a ton of money.

Zayed, who has been stationed in Bangkok and Phuket for the past month, says: "It's never been done before. On the concept level itself it sounds too, too outrageous. The entire cast singing in the deep sea. That's unique, man!"

Hate to burst Zayed's bubble. But decades ago in "Anmol Moti" claiming to be India's first underwater film Jeetendra and Babita sang 'under water', which was actually a swimming pool.

So, yes, "Blue" is the first Bollywood film that will have the entire cast of Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara, Katrina and Zayed doing a song sequence in the deep sea.

A baffling concept for sure.

Laughs Zayed, "Yes. But you've to see how we're going to do it. The director got the concept from an ad. We all jumped at it. It's not often that you get to do something so unique."

But with the excitement comes the damper. Inclement weather in Bangkok is playing havoc with the "Blue" schedules.

Says the anxious and depressed Zayed, "We knew it was going to rain in Bangkok and Phuket. But not like this! Apparently this area has never had so much rains. Every day we're losing precious time. Today again we're stuck indoors while it pours outside. The producers are losing Rs.2.5 million per day. And moreover we can't extend the shooting because we - Sanju Sir, Akshay and I - can't give combined dates for a long time," said Zayed Saturday.

A good excuse for the unit to bond? "Not really. I'd rather be back home with my wife Malli(Malaika) and son Zidaan. I miss them, specially my son. I want to watch him grow, not be away for long periods from home and miss this phase in my son's life."

Zidaan can't travel with Papa all the time. "He came with my wife to the Bahamas when we were shooting there. But he can't keep travelling all over. He has to develop an immunity system. I do miss my son. But my wife emails me his pictures every day."

Aamir Khan cautions people against forces dividing India

Bollywood star Aamir Khan Monday cautioned people to stay away from the political leaders who try to divide the country on the basis of religion, caste or community.

Responding to a query on the recent controversy between Raj Thackeray and Jaya Bachchan, Aamir said: "People should stay away from politicians and leaders who try to divide the masses on the basis of religion, caste or community."

"It is harmful to the country and does no good to anyone. Any leader who tries to divide people on that line does that for his own personal gain and people should understand his intentions and stay away from him."

"People should not vote them to power as that will be harmful for everyone," the actor-turned-director said without naming any politician.

Aamir was addressing a press conference, for the promotion for his film "Taare Zameen Par" that has been selected as the Indian official entry to the Oscars.

"India (has) several languages and people should respect each one of them. One should respect the local language as it is also an integral part of any culture," he said.

Shilpa Shetty is okay with botox if it comes to that .

Actress Shilpa Shetty is not averse to botox, but doesn't feel the need for it yet. She's a household name in Britain after her row with Jade Goody in the Big Boss show.

She told Daily Mail in an interview that she's aware she's aware she's ageing and is practical about it: "I'm aware I'm getting older, but I'll take it as it comes - I'm not averse to having botox, for example, but I just don't feel I need it yet. The way I see it, I spent a long time getting comfortable with who I am. I was an ugly duckling as a child, and it took a lot of hard work to get to where I am today, where I'm not so self-critical.

"I still don't think I'm as good-looking as my sister, Shamita, or even my mother, who is stunning, even now. But I've metamorphosed into the person I am today, and I'm pretty content."

Shilpa says she owes a lot to the controversial Big Boss show for opening avenues for her. I didn't have that international platform - and I'm not embarrassed to say that I have it now because of Big Brother. I'm very aware that the UK public stood up for me and for what was right, and I'm very grateful for that. Everyone in life makes mistakes - you learn from them and move on."

She has made peace with her former fellow contestant, Jade Goody, now diagnosed with cancer. "I spoke to her before she returned to the UK, but it was a very private conversation that I won't share. She knows we've buried the hatchet. Life's too short to bear any hatred. I can only pray that she makes a full recovery."

She is more open now about her relationship with London-based entrepreneur Raj Kundra. The long-distance relationship - she's in Mumbai - does not come easy, but at the same time it has made them value each other more, she confesses.

So, is she ready for marriage to Raj? "Definitely, and I'm sure I will, God willing. I intend to try and do that as soon as my professional life has calmed down hopefully in the next couple of years. I don't want to make too many predictions as I don't believe in making too many plans, but, yes, I have a man in my life and, yes, I hope we will get married."

Now Priyanka teams up with Shah Rukh for item song

After Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra has been chosen as the third heroine to make a special appearance in Priyadarshan's "Billoo Barber" and shake a leg with Shah Rukh Khan.

And Priyadarshan says it was a cakewalk for the superstar to get the leading ladies to do a cameo in his comedy.

"Since Shah Rukh plays a filmstar in the movie, I needed him to do some big glamorous song and dance numbers with some top heroines. I left the choice to Shah Rukh. I knew all he had to do was to pick up the phone and ask any of his leading ladies," Priyadarshan told IANS.

According to sources, it was a tie between Rani Mukerji and Priyanka for the third item song with Shah Rukh Khan in "Billoo Barber".

"But after Rani appeared on Salman Khan's game show 'Dus Ka Dum' and knowing there's no love lost between Salman and Priyanka, the scales tilted automatically towards Priyanka," an industry source said.

Though King Khan has done item numbers earlier in "Shakti", "Kaal" and "Krazzy 4", this would be Priyanka's first item number.

The song with Kareena was shot at the very start of the shooting.

"At this very moment, I'm shooting a second item song with Deepika and Shah Rukh. That's again a very catchy number and Shah Rukh is having a ball shooting with Deepika," Priyadarshan said.

Interestingly, the director was supposed to launch Deepika two years ago in a film called "Pirate".

"But that didn't work out. She made her debut with Shah Rukh (in 'Om Shanti Om'). Now she's working with him again. And I also got a chance to work with her. Don't ask who's the lucky one," he quipped.

Inspired by the story of Lord Krishna and his childhood friend Sudama, a poor Brahmin, "Billoo Barber" tells the tale of a superstar and his pal Billoo (Irrfan Khan), who is a barber by profession.

Malaika's son has huge crush on Katrina Kaif

Guess who is eyeing Salman Khan's girlfriend Katrina Kaif? It's none other than his four year-old nephew Arhaan, son of Malaika Arora and Arbaaz!

"My four-year-old son Arhaan has the most incurable crush on Katrina. Whenever she's around, I become completely unimportant to my son," Malaika told IANS.

"It's a family joke that Arhaan is smitten by Katrina. Every time Katrina and I speak she wants to know where Arhaan is so she could take him out," she said.

After Katrina, Kareena Kapoor too is a favourite with the little boy.

"When Arbaaz and I visited Kareena's location in Hollywood last month, Arhaan became a total lamb. I ceased to exist. Everything was about Kareena only. And I was shocked when my boy, who gives me a hard time feeding him, would ask for everything that Kareena ordered at restaurants and eat quietly without taking his eyes off Kareena," said Malaika, who's known for her dance moves in hit songs like "Chaiyya chaiyya".

Far from sharing cold vibes with Salman's friend Katrina, Malaika actually shares a good rapport with the actress who has written new box office rules by giving six back-to-back hits.

So what are these stories about Malaika's cold war with Katrina?

"There's absolutely nothing to this talk of my cold war with Katrina. I've no space or time for having these kinds of issues with people. I feel life is too precious for these kinds of run-ins.

"It was written that I didn't attend Katrina's birthday. But I was shooting for my reality show ('Zara Nach Ke Dikha') and I couldn't make it. Is that a crime? Are there laws against skipping a family gathering because I was working?

"It was said I didn't go to Katrina's birthday because I couldn't get along with her. Bullshit! And now we're supposed to have shared cold vibes with Katrina at Salman's sister birthday party. Why would I spoil Arpita's party by behaving like such a party-pooper?"

Malaika says she's a total family woman.

"These are very upsetting rumours because it involves the entire family. I'm such a family person. I'd drop anything for family. Katrina isn't someone I hang around with every day or go out with for coffees and lunches. But she's part of our family and I completely respect her presence.

"But, no, she isn't part of my close friends' circle. Both of us come from decent families. My parents would slap me if I misbehaved with anyone, least of all Katrina who is part of our family."

"No one from Arbaaz's side or my own side of the family can accuse me of behaving highhandedly or aloof. I go out of my way for family. My mother would kick my ass if I behaved like a prima donna. Someone is obviously getting a lot of pleasure by spreading these rumours."

Is it someone from the Khan family?

"I wouldn't know. But whoever it is, I hope he or she is having a good time," said Malaika who will be seen in a full-fledged role in forthcoming film "EMI".

My husband should be like Ronit Roy: Ekta Kapoor

TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor has set the criteria for her ideal life partner saying he should be good looking, tall and handsome, in short, like Ronit Roy.

Ronit is playing Bhishm Pitamah in her mythological series "Kahaani Humaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki" and Ekta was here to promote the show.

Though she refused to answer any personal questions, she made it a point to clarify that she is “not getting married to Karan Johar”. Rumours of her affair with the Bollywood filmmaker were doing the rounds for a long time.

Akshay Kumar to adopt flood-hit village in Bihar

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar will adopt a flood-hit village in Bihar and help rehabilitate the victims, filmmaker Prakash Jha, who is also engaged in relief work, said Sunday.

"Akshay Kumar has decided to adopt a village for rehabilitation," Jha told reporters here.

Jha, who is from Bihar, has set up an organisation called Punarwaas with help from NGOs like Anubhooti and Prayas.

He said he was running a relief camp for 5,000 people in Kataiya in Supaul district, one of the worst hit by the floods. He said he had the backing of several Bollywood friends.

Apart from adopting a village, Akshay has donated Rs.2.5 million to Jha's rehabilitation programme.

"Akshay promised that he would provide more money if required," said the director, who has made films like "Apaharan" and "GangaaJal".

He added that other Hindi filmstars like Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpayi and Shekhar Suman were also pitching in to help flood victims.

Disaster Management Minister Nitish Mishra said that rehabilitating hundreds of thousands of people affected by the calamity was a "Herculean task".

"The state government plans to adopt the rehabilitation pattern used for victims of tsunami (2004) as well as the earthquake in Gujarat (2001)," he said.

It has been a month since the Kosi river breached an embankment in upstream Nepal, swamping hundreds of villages and affecting over three million people in Bihar.

The disaster has claimed at least 50 lives, according to official estimates, but voluntary agencies fear the toll could be in thousands once the water recedes and bodies are recovered.

About 989,000 people have been evacuated to safer places. Around 350,000 people have taken shelter in over 300 relief camps.
